The challenge to rethink waste starts at home. Northern Ireland must get to grips with waste generated at home, as household municipal waste remains one of the main environmental challenges facing our society.

Every person in Northern Ireland generates almost ½ tonne of household waste per year. Overall, that equates to around one tonne of rubbish per household per year. It is now accepted in society here that the amount of waste we generate in the home must be reduced.

The Northern Ireland Environmental Agency Statistics Report (2009) showed how big a concern household waste had become. The report found that in 2007/2008 the three main environmental concerns for Northern Ireland residents were: climate change (39%), household waste disposal (34%) and traffic exhaust fumes and urban smog (31%).
